NASA Space Center Tour: What to Expect

Allstar Limousine & Tours8 min read

Space Center Houston is the official visitor center of NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and one of the most remarkable educational attractions in the United States. Located at 1601 E NASA Parkway in the Clear Lake area, approximately 30 miles southeast of downtown Houston via I-45 South, Space Center Houston draws over one million visitors annually and offers an experience that is truly unlike anything else in the world. Whether you are a lifelong space enthusiast, a family with curious kids, or a visitor seeing Houston for the first time, a trip to Space Center Houston should be at the very top of your itinerary. Here is everything you need to know to plan your visit.

Getting to Space Center Houston

Space Center Houston is located in the Clear Lake/Webster area, south of Houston along the Gulf Freeway (I-45 South). From downtown Houston, the drive is approximately 25 to 35 minutes without traffic, though I-45 South can be congested during rush hours and on weekends. From the Galleria/Uptown area, expect 35 to 45 minutes. From The Woodlands or north Houston, plan for 50 to 70 minutes via I-45.

The easiest and most comfortable way to visit Space Center Houston is with a professional NASA Space Center tour from Allstar Limousine and Tours. Our tour packages include round-trip transportation from anywhere in the Houston area, so you do not have to worry about navigation, parking, or traffic. Your chauffeur drops you off at the entrance and returns to pick you up when your visit is complete. It is the stress-free way to experience one of Houston's premier attractions.

Admission and Hours

Space Center Houston is open daily (except Thanksgiving and Christmas), with hours typically from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays and 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekends and holidays. Extended summer hours are common during peak season (June through August). Adult admission is approximately $29.95, children ages 4 to 11 are $24.95, and children 3 and under enter free. Tickets can be purchased online in advance, which we strongly recommend to avoid ticket counter lines on busy days. Active duty military and veterans receive discounted admission.

Must-See Exhibits and Experiences

NASA Tram Tour

The NASA Tram Tour is the highlight of any Space Center Houston visit and the one experience you absolutely cannot miss. This guided tour takes you behind the gates of the Johnson Space Center — the active NASA facility where astronauts train, Mission Control operates, and the future of human spaceflight is being planned. The tram tour visits two stops:

  • Historic Mission Control: Stand in the room where NASA engineers guided the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969. The room has been painstakingly restored to its 1969 appearance, complete with original consoles, vintage displays, and period-correct details. Looking at those consoles and imagining the tension of the moon landing is a genuinely moving experience.
  • Rocket Park / Saturn V Complex: See one of only three remaining Saturn V rockets in the world — the most powerful rocket ever successfully launched. The 363-foot rocket is displayed on its side inside a massive climate-controlled building, and standing beneath it gives you a visceral sense of the engineering marvel that carried humans to the moon. The Saturn V is awe-inspiring regardless of your level of interest in space.

Important note: Tram Tour times are limited and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early in the day (ideally when the center opens) and head directly to the Tram Tour queue. On busy days, wait times can exceed 90 minutes by mid-morning.

Starship Gallery

The Starship Gallery houses an incredible collection of spacecraft and space artifacts. Highlights include the Apollo 17 command module (which carried the last humans to the Moon), a flown Gemini capsule, a genuine moon rock you can touch, and the full-size Skylab trainer. This gallery alone could occupy a space enthusiast for hours.

International Space Station Gallery

See a full-size replica of the International Space Station modules and learn about life aboard the ISS. Interactive exhibits let you explore crew quarters, the laboratory modules, and the engineering behind keeping humans alive in orbit for months at a time.

Space Shuttle Independence and NASA 905

One of Space Center Houston's most spectacular exhibits is the full-size replica of the Space Shuttle Independence mounted atop NASA 905, the original Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft that transported space shuttles from landing sites back to Kennedy Space Center. You can walk through both the shuttle and the 747, exploring the cockpit, cargo bay, and crew areas. This exhibit is located in the outdoor plaza and is included with general admission.

Astronaut Gallery and Living in Space

Learn about the personal stories of astronauts, from the Mercury Seven to today's ISS crew members. Exhibits cover astronaut selection, training, spacewalks, and the physical challenges of living in microgravity. Kids especially love the interactive displays that simulate space suit operations and lunar gravity.

Insider Tips for Your Visit

  • Plan for a full day: Space Center Houston has far more content than most visitors expect. Allow at least five to six hours to see the major exhibits and take the Tram Tour. Seven to eight hours is ideal if you want to see everything without rushing.
  • Arrive early: Gates open at 10:00 AM, and the first hour is the least crowded. Head straight to the Tram Tour to secure an early time slot, then explore the indoor galleries while waiting.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: You will do a lot of walking, including outdoor portions of the Tram Tour. Houston weather can be hot and humid, so dress accordingly.
  • Bring sunscreen and water: Parts of the experience are outdoors, including the shuttle exhibit and portions of the Tram Tour. Houston sun is intense, especially from April through October.
  • Eat at the Space Center: The on-site Zero-G Diner offers standard cafeteria fare. It is not gourmet, but it is convenient and reasonably priced, allowing you to maximize your time at the exhibits.
  • Check for special events: Space Center Houston regularly hosts special events, including astronaut appearances, STEM workshops, and seasonal programs. Check their website before your visit to see if anything special aligns with your dates.

Combining Space Center Houston with a City Tour

Many of our clients combine a Space Center Houston visit with a broader Houston city tour, making for an incredible full-day experience. A typical combo itinerary might include a morning city tour covering downtown Houston, the Museum District, River Oaks, and Buffalo Bayou Park, followed by a midday drive to Space Center Houston for an afternoon exploring NASA. Our chauffeurs provide narration and local insights throughout the drive, turning the journey between stops into part of the experience.

Family-Friendly Features

Space Center Houston is one of the best family-friendly attractions in Texas. In addition to the major exhibits described above, the center offers a kids' space play area for younger children, STEM-focused interactive stations, seasonal science camps, and a gift shop with NASA merchandise that makes for excellent souvenirs. Children of all ages find something to engage with, from the touchable moon rock to the astronaut suit photo ops.
